Every local authority has been asked by the government to prepare a statutory climate action plan for the county and stitched in that plan is to select a pilot decarbonisation zone in order to test the scale and scope of decarbonising our economy and society.

Ireland aims to reduce carbon emissions 51% by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The decarbonisation zone will test the scale of this challenge and allow us to map and engage the stakeholders needed to achieve this goal. Learnings from the pilot decarbonisation zone will be replicated countywide. An annual reduction in carbon emissions of 7% is the target.

A baseline emissions inventory was carried out, to assess current emissions and inform the 18 dedicated actions contained within the LACAP. The Decarbonising zone was formally launched in October 2024.
