Cathaoirleach Cllr. Laurence Fallon invited Primary and Secondary Schools to take part in the Local Heroes Rock Art Project - Cathaoirleach’s Awards Competition 2021.
Students were asked to create art pieces responding to the theme ‘Local Heroes’ using small rocks or stones to be part of their School’s Rock Art Trail with Four Prizes of €250 up for grabs and all runners up receiving €100 for their schools. Local heroes could be historical or present day, from any walk of life. For example, a local sports hero, someone from the arts, front line workers, local volunteers, teachers or family members that they felt have earned hero status in their eyes.
The students (and teachers) of Roscommon did not disappoint. Their imaginations ran wild to create inspirational, colourful, artist rock art trails throughout the county and after the tough task of judging the four winning schools were announced:
-Ballyfarnon National School
-Kilteevan National School
-Scoil Na nAingeal Naofa
While observing Covid restrictions, Cathaoirleach Cllr. Laurence Fallon and Arts Officer Rhona McGrath set of on a trip from the north to the south of the county to deliver the awards to the winning groups and were met by a vibrant, proud and thoroughly engaging groups of young people in each of the 4 schools they visited.

The Roscommon County Council Culture Team would like to take this opportunity to thank Cllr. Laurence Fallon for his time and participation in the awards programme and also to commend all of the schools that got involved.
The Cathaoirleach’s Awards are supported by Roscommon County Council and the Creative Ireland Programme, an all-of-Government five-year initiative, from 2017 to 2022, which places creativity at the centre of public policy. Further information from creative.ireland.ie and ireland.ie
