The Termonbarry Riverside Park Project is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union under the EU Just Transition Fund

Background and Funding 

Roscommon County Council has received €95,000 funding to deliver a Feasibility Study and Preferred Option Report for a Riverside Park in Termonbarry Village adjoining the River Shannon.

This funding is being provided by Fáilte Ireland through the EU Just Transition Fund Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme (2023-2026) under the EU Just Transition Fund (EUJTF) 2021 – 2027.

Cunnane Stratton Reynolds has been appointed to complete the study and report.

Project Aims & Objectives

The project will deliver a Feasibility Study and Preferred Option Report recommending an agreed concept design and development strategy for the proposed Riverside Park Development which aligns with and delivers on the key objectives below

• Enhances and expands tourism and recreational infrastructure to benefit the local economy and attract more visitors to Termonbarry & the surrounding Towns & Villages, particularly those arriving by boat, car, bicycle or by motor-home.
• Improves connectivity by establishing linkages between water amenities, the village, the proposed Royal Canal Greenway extension from Clondra to Termonbarry, the Bord na Mona Greenway to Rooskey and the larger TII Lough Ree Greenway projects.
• Enhances opportunities for locals and visitors to be active in nature and outdoor recreation.
• Enhances the visitor experience with the possible introduction of new recreational and tourism activities.
• Drives economic growth in the region and create a more sustainable and resilient community.
• Aligns with the vision in strategies such as the regional Tourism Strategy (Irelands Hidden Heartlands), 'Shannon Tourism Masterplan', the 'Visitor and Tourism Plan for Richmond Harbour, Cloondara and Termonbarry', and the EU Just Transition Scheme.

Update (August 2026)

A public engagement event was held in Termonbarry on 7th July 2026 from 3pm to 7pm and was well attended. This event, together with an online survey (now closed) provided a mechanism for the community to give feedback on the preferred concept.
