Community Involvement Schemes (CIS) are a joint venture between you the public and Roscommon County Council, aimed at improving the quality of public roads which need repair. While CIS funding relates mainly to local roads, primarily local tertiary and local secondary roads, they may be carried out on a regional road in limited circumstances where the local community contribution is monetary only.  Eligible works include:

  • Providing hard stands at field entrances
  • Removal of grass verges or banks
  • Site preparation works including the removal of grass from the centre of the road (where required)
  • Opening, deepening and generally maintaining drains alongside roadway and adjoining land including the laying of drainage pipes, where appropriate
  • Providing gully traps at suitable locations and piping to drains, where appropriate
  • Opening inlets
  • Opening backshores
  • Unblocking of shores/surface water drains
  • Repair of potholes
  • Surface dressing works
  • Road strengthening works
  • Repair of footpaths
  • Construction of new footpaths

 The Scheme, which is funded by the Department of Transport, is based on a minimum community contribution of either 8% or 20% for eligible works, including general maintenance, drainage works, pavement works and footpaths, based on the criteria below:

  • Where the local community contribution is monetary a minimum contribution rate of 8% will apply;
  • Where the local community contribution comprises works the minimum contribution rate will be 20%;

The Department of Transport has invited local authorities to apply for funding for the years 2026 and 2027. Roscommon County Council invites Expressions of Interest from householders and landowners on local and regional roads who wish to participate in the Community Involvement Scheme.

 Application forms are available at www.roscommoncoco.ie or by email to roads@roscommoncoco.ie

 The closing date for receipt of applications is close of business on Tuesday 23 September 2025
