Tenancy of Local Authority Housing

Differential Rent

Tenants of rented Council dwellings pay rent which is calculated based on the Housing Differential Rent Scheme. This means that the rent is based on ability to pay, so if income is low, rent will be low; and if income increases, so will the rent. The income of any other members of the household will be added to the rent calculation and there may be deductions for any children in the family.

If your circumstances have changed please complete the attached Declaration of Income form.

How can I pay my rent?

Rent can be paid a number of different ways:

  • By household budget (deduction at source from my social welfare payment made in the post office)

  • Bank Standing Order which can be set up at the bank

  • Bill Pay at the post office, using a rent card supplied by the local authority

  • At the cash desk in the Local Authority offices at Áras an Chontae, Roscommon

Under-declaration of Household Income

Where household income is not declared or under declared any arrears of rent will be applied to the rent account. It is the responsibility of the tenant to declare any changes in household income or changes in the household occupancy.

Relinquishing of Tenancy

If you wish to relinquish your tenancy you should contact the Housing Department at 090 6637100 as it is necessary to give 4 weeks advance notice. Prior to vacating the premises your house must undergo a house inspection and it will also be necessary to have a clear rent account before departure.

Transfer

If you wish to be considered for a transfer from your current accommodation please complete the Tenant Transfer Form and submit it to the Housing Officer, Roscommon County Council, Áras an Chontae, Roscommon.  You will be notified in writing of a decision in relation to your application.

A Transfer will only be granted where there is a genuine need and the house in which you occupy is returned to Roscommon County Council in a good state of repair.
