The Photographic Archive Project is a public and private collaboration between Roscommon County Council: Library Services, Glynn’s Photography, Castlerea and various employment scheme coordinating bodies. The project brings together various agencies to preserve, develop and make accessible an important collection of photographic material relating to the County.

Safeguarding, protecting, conserving and developing photographic resources of this nature, which are a rich source of information, are a vital part of local authority records, archives and local studies policies that will preserve them for future generations.

The project involves digitizing over 100,000 images dating back to the 1950s and utilizing the best possible available expertise, standards and technology applications to develop in time a full online photographic resource collection, with master copies at the County Library.

These particular images dating back over many years are part of the social and community history of the county which are now in the process of being scanned. Photographic collections, more than most, have the power to evoke nostalgic experiences, bring the past to life and provide us with memories of people, places and time, covering a wide range of occasions, gatherings and events throughout Roscommon.

To date some 70,000 images have been, identified, tagged, scanned and processed and photographs are used as part of a wide range of events.
