Cultural Companions
Would you go to a lot more plays, films, shows, concerts, exhibitions or other events if you had someone to go with? There’s a thriving social and arts scene in County Roscommon to be enjoyed but maybe you need someone with a shared interest to get you going. That’s where Cultural Companions comes in.
Cultural Companions is a new programme in County Roscommon which will create local networks of people aged 50+ interested in the arts and culture who accompany each other to plays, films, shows, concerts, exhibitions and other events. These like-minded people meet up regularly to go out together either with one other person or as part of a small group. The programme provides a wonderful opportunity to engage in a variety of events and cultural activities throughout the county while making new acquaintances along the way.
The aim of Cultural Companions is to provide increased opportunities for older people to engage with Roscommon’s vibrant arts and cultural scene. It also addresses the issue of social isolation amongst older people by facilitating their engagement in arts and cultural opportunities, and by also providing volunteer companions for encouragement and support.
Cultural Companions is an Age & Opportunity Arts Initiative supported by Roscommon County Council’s Arts Office & Age Friendly Programme, Roscommon Volunteer Centre and Roscommon Arts Centre.

This programme is funded by HSE CHO2 Older People Services.

Slow Art Bursaries
Every year Roscommon County Council Arts Office invites artists on the Facilitators Panel (all art-forms, individually or collaboratively) to propose Slow Art Projects which engage with older communities in County Roscommon.
Artists can collaborate with local community organisations, such as: a community hall, a care home, hospital, health centre, arts centre etc.
These projects often culminate in an event held during our annual Bealtaine Festival.

Bealtaine Festival - Ireland’s national celebration of the arts and creativity as we age
The Bealtaine Festival, held throughout the month of May, is Ireland’s national festival celebrating the arts and creativity as we age . The festival is run by Age & Opportunity the leading national development organisation working to enable the best possible quality of life for us all as we age.
Roscommon Bealtaine Festival 2025!

Bealtaine 2025 celebrates its 30th anniversary! The theme for the festival 2024-2026 is ‘Lust for Life', based on Iggy Pop's iconic punk-era song that celebrates life's dreams, ambitions, intoxications and excesses. Roscommon Arts Office welcomed events and projects proposed by artists to engage older aged groups through creative activities. Please see our full programme below, in partnership with Roscommon Arts Centre and Roscommon Libraries Service.
We also offered an Artist Award of €500 to one older aged, Roscommon-based artist on our facilitators panel to contribute to the development of their own practice. Artist Jacqueline Duignan was selected for this award in 2025.
