New speed limit on rural local roads from 7 February 2025

Speed limits on all local roads will be reduced from 7 February 2025 as part of a government strategy that aims to bring down the number of fatalities and injuries caused by traffic collisions. A speed limit review published in September 2023 concluded that protecting vulnerable road users must be a key focus when setting speed limits. In April 2024, the Road Traffic Act 2024 was signed into law and included provisions to amend the default speed limits on rural, local roads, urban roads and national secondary roads. The change in default speed limits for rural local roads, from 80km/h to 60km/h, will be implemented first, starting on 7 February 2025.

The speed limit on the local road network in Roscommon will be reduced from 80km to 60km on 7th February 2025, with the exception of the old N5 near Ballaghaderreen, now the L1244, which will remain at 80km.  Special Speed Limit Bye-Laws to maintain the current speed limit of 80km on this road were adopted in November 2024.  Works are ongoing to replace existing signs to reflect the changes.

Future implementation phases will focus on the speed limit in urban areas, which include built up areas as well as housing estates and town centres, reducing to 30 km/h. The speed limit on national secondary roads is recommended to reduce from 100km/h to 80km/h.
