Roscommon County Youth Theatre's 2018 production was
The House of Oedipus by Anna Galligan
An epic Greek Tragedy for a large cast, following the story of one man’s family who are doomed from the beginning.
Are pride and stubbornness the cause Oedipus’ downfall or did he commit some unknown sin against the Gods? He committed a crime but did not know it was a crime, was he guilty? Bringing four Greek tragedies together, this full-length play brings us three generations, two countries, five kings, two plagues and one war. We meet the unknowing Oedipus who kills his father and marries his mother with dire consequences not only for himself but his whole family. There’s his brother-in-law, Creon who professes not to want the crown but his actions say different. Then Antigone, that famous heroine, who walks to her death strong in her convictions that her actions were true. For the youth theatre that is up for a rewarding challenge, this play offers myriad opportunities for ensemble work, complex characters, high drama and tragedy! With plenty of scope for differing cast size and gender demands, there is lots to offer newer and more experienced youth theatre members.

HISTORY
Roscommon County Youth Theatre, now in its 15th year is back in full swing with a fun packed exciting programme for budding young actors aged 14-22 years. RCYT is a professional youth theatre organisation designed to provide opportunities for young people who have a passion for acting and performance. While many members aspire to have careers in the performance industry, many members have become involved for the social aspect of joining such a dynamic and fun-filled group.
Roscommon County Youth Theatre is dedicated to the development and promotion of youth theatre through training, production and access, and encourages a greater understanding of the potential of drama as a medium for learning and as a means of expression for young people.
As a youth theatre, we advocate a way of working which puts the integrity of the young people at the centre of a process valuing both exploration and artistic excellence. Our approach to youth drama differs from professional or amateur theatre in that youth drama is not about producing plays for people to see. The process involved is considered equally as if not more important than the finished product. Youth drama encourages the development of the whole person, and uses a range of drama methods to respond to the personal needs of the participants involved and contributes towards the development of the creative, physical, social and intuitive intelligences in its participants.
The aim of RCYT is to combine the abilities of many different young people in an environment where they can learn and develop their skills in a non-judgemental atmosphere. No previous experience is necessary, the only requirement is that new members have an open mind and are willing to have fun while meeting new people. RCYT is a supportive youth network with a focus on expanding the minds of young people while constantly aiming to build confidence and interpersonal skills. Whether or not you have performed before, RCYT could be the place for you!

National Youth Theatre (NYT) is an annual large-scale production with professional artistic and technical teams and a cast of young people from youth theatres across Ireland. The Young Critics Programme brings members of youth theatres from around the country together to attend workshops in the critique of professional theatre, to attend performances at leading Irish festivals and to give critiques of the performances at the Young Critics Panel during the Dublin Theatre Festival. The National Festival of Youth Theatres is an annual gathering of Youth Theatres from around the country where each group showcases their work, develops new skills, and meets and works with other Youth Theatres.
MORE INFO
Participation in theatre is an opportunity we wish to make accessible to all young people irrespective of means or ability. Therefore prospective members need not have had any previous experience of drama and membership fees are heavily subsidised by Roscommon County Council, The Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
RCYT is always looking for new members. If you are 14 years old or over and interested in any aspect of theatre, joining RCYT is a great way to meet other people who have the same passion as you. It is very sociable and you will have the opportunity to learn a whole range of new skills and to work in a professional theatre setting.
Some former members of RCYT have gone on to study theatre at third level and found that RCYT gave them a distinct advantage. But whether you want to make a career out of it or would just like to make friends, express yourself and have fun, RCYT could be the place for you.
