EV - WT Training Programme Just Transition Fund

Roscommon County Council (RCC), in association with Galway Roscommon Educational Training board (GRETB) and fully funded by the EU Just Transition Fund Programme, have developed two dedicated training courses in support of Climate Action in the County and wider region. One of these is on DIY wind turbine construction and the other on Electric Vehicle Maintenance and Repair with both courses presented regularly on an ongoing basis.

Small scale self-build wind turbine course.

This course is based on the small wind turbine designed and developed by Hugh Piggot of Scoraig Wind Electric which is particularly suitable for self-build as the requirement for expensive equipment is minimized, meaning anyone can construct one with only basic equipment needed.

During the 8 days of the course participants will build a small scall wind turbine from scratch providing the participants with the skills to construct their own domestic turbine to generate renewable energy.  Participants will learn such skills as how to carve the blades from timber, welding the metal components and setting up the coils and wiring needed to produce the electricity. This course was developed to provide upskilling opportunities to the communities most affected by the process of Just Transition, the course provides a practical route to decarbonizing electricity generation locally. Small-scale turbine construction also enables adaptation to the impacts of climate change, providing an alternative power source in the event of outages resulting from storms such as the recent storm Éowyn which caused such disruption to electricity supply in the region. Participants on the course report having a positive and creative experience and many have continued to work together on micro-generation projects across the county and region.

All tools and equipment needed to build the turbine will be provided on the course, no previous experience is necessary and all are welcome to attend.

EV maintenance and repair course

The City and Guilds accredited EV training begun in October 2025 in newly refurbished premises at Roscommon Enterprise Centre, Racecourse Rd. Roscommon with IMI levels1-4 courses planned on an ongoing basis.

The lack of knowledge of and experience in the repair/maintenance of EVs can be considered as a barrier to the decarbonisation of transport and the widespread adoption of EVs. The EV training on offer goes a long way to solving this issue. The provision of EV maintenance and repair training will enable currently employed mechanics, and anyone with an interest, to increase their skillsets, making them more resilient to the changes and opportunities in the sector brought about by the transition to a low carbon economy and EV based transport. The availability of local maintenance will help to further mainstream the use of electric vehicles.

All required tools and equipment will be provided for the courses and whilst a working knowledge of motor maintenance is a good starting point, no previous experience is necessary. All members of the public are welcome to attend the EV courses.
