The Joint Carrick-on-Shannon Local Area Plan (2025–2031) sets out a clear and coordinated framework to guide the planned, sustainable development of Carrick-on-Shannon and Cortober. Developed through a collaborative approach by Roscommon and Leitrim County Council, this is the first Joint Local Area Plan (JLAP) for the town. The JLAP places a strong emphasis on delivering an integrated vision for the future growth and regeneration of both Carrick-on-Shannon and Cortober, recognising their shared role in the social, economic and spatial development of the area.

The JLAP aligns with key national and regional planning policy, including the National Planning Framework (NPF), the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES) 2020–2032 for the Northern and Western Region, and the current County Development Plans of both local authorities.

The Plan comprises a Written Statement and supporting Maps and is accompanied by a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), an Appropriate Assessment (AA), and a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA) in accordance with relevant legislative requirements.

The Joint Carrick-on-Shannon Local Area Plan (2025–2031) came into effect on the 19th of May 2025.
