"I believe that artistic, creative and cultural activity will bring communities together to strengthen our economy and promote our sense of identity, preserve our culture and celebrate our diversity.

Roscommon County Council’s Arts Plan 2023 – 2028 will work to support artists of all disciplines; enhance creativity in the lives of all participants and audiences; enrich public engagement with the arts in all its forms; and promote continued strategic and sustainable investment in arts and cultural infrastructure.

I welcome the strategy, which will maximise the potential of the arts to contribute to key areas of local development across Culture, Community, Climate and Economy so as to enrich the quality of the lives of the people of County Roscommon."

ARTS PLAN 2017 - 2021

Arts Plan - 2017 - 2021.pdf (size 2.7 MB)

"When we talk about the value of arts and culture to society, we always begin with the intrinsic value - how arts and culture can nurture and grow our inner lives and enrich our emotional world. This is what we value. However, we also understand that arts and culture has a wider, more measurable impact on our economy, health and wellbeing, education and society. It is important that we also recognise this impact, in order to help people think of our arts and culture for what they are - a strategic national resource. Both concepts of the value of arts and culture i.e. intrinsic and extrinsic are not mutually exclusive – indeed they are both fundamental to our understanding of the influence of the arts and culture on the individual and to society.

Roscommon County Council’s Arts Plan 2017 – 2021 focuses on the artist, children and young people, public engagement with the arts and the continued strategic and sustainable investment in arts infrastructure. These four priorities, I believe will, on the one hand, grow and develop the arts in the county in both exciting and innovative ways and, on the other hand will, reinforce the tremendous drive and momentum, which has build up over the past number of years.

The Arts Plan acknowledges and validates the significance and importance of the arts and culture at both an individual and societal level and, I believe, demonstrates the enormous value that is placed on the arts by Roscommon County Council. I welcome the Arts Plan 2017 – 2021, and I look forward to the delivery of the various programmes and initiatives, which will evolve during the lifetime of the plan."

- Eugene Cummins, Chief Exective
Comhairle Contae Ros Comáin.
