Private Cars

For first taxing of a new or imported car you need:

  1. Application Form RF100 (From Garage or N.C.T.) fully completed

To renew motor taxation you need:

  1. Completed application form, i.e. Reminder RF100B

To renew tax where a re-declaration is necessary (e.g. change of address, change of class, change of engine) you need:

  1. Completed Declaration Form RF111

  2. Registration Book/Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate

  3. Where there is a change of engine Section 5 of RF111 must be stamped by a Main Dealer and a letter from the Main Dealer on headed paper verifying the change must also be submitted.

Changes of Ownership, Vehicles registered before 1/1/1993:

Dealt with by local Motor Taxation Office.

Changes of Ownership, Vehicles registered since 1/1/93:

If taxing is not taking place then, fully completed Change of Ownership details on reverse of Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate should be forwarded to Vehicle Registration Unit, Shannon, Co. Clare.

To renew tax after a change of ownership. For vehicles registered pre-1993 you need:

  1. Completed Form RF100A (Tax Renewal)

  2. Registration Book

To renew tax after a change of ownership. For vehicles registered after 01/01/1993 you need:

If change of ownership is taking place at point of taxing, you will need

  1. Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate fully completed by seller and buyer with date of sale inserted

  2. Fully completed Form RF100A

Goods Vehicles

Heavy goods: Design Gross Vehicle Weight greater than 3500kgs Light goods: Design Gross Vehicle Weight less than or equal to 3500kgs.

For first taxation of a new or imported goods vehicle you need:

  1. Completed Application Form RF100 (From Garage or N.C.T.)

  2. Weight docket from authorised weigh-bridge if weight over 1524 Kgs (See List Below)

  3. Goods only declaration form RF111A stamped by Gardai where the vehicle has a design gross vehicle weight of 3,500kgs or under

  4. From 1/10/13 a current Certificate of Roadworthiness is issued automatically subsequent to completion of vehicle test. (See list of authorised testers) (For vehicles 1 yr or older)

  5. Certificate of Insurance covering commercial use.

To renew motor taxation on a goods vehicle you need:

  1. Completed application form, i.e. Reminder RF100B

  2. From 1/10/13 a current Certificate of Roadworthiness is issued automatically subsequent to completion of vehicle test. (See list of authorised testers) (For vehicles 1 yr or older)

Articulated Vehicle

An articulated vehicle (i.e. vehicle and semi-trailer) is regarded as a single vehicle and motor tax is payable on the basis of the unladen weight of the tractor unit plus the unladen weight of the heaviest semi-trailer which will be used at any time during the period of the licence. A Weightmasters Certificate from an Authorised Weighbridge must be presented for the first time taxing of such vehicles

Motor Caravans

Declaration form (available from Motor Tax Office) must accompany application.

Taxi/Hackney/Limousine

Must be accompanied by a valid P.S.V. Drivers licence and Taxi/Hackney/Limousine Licence.

Vintage/Veteran

Must be 30 years old. Application form required is RF100A or RF111 for first time taxing as vintage.

Large P.S.V

Forms required for taxing are as per Private Vehicles Tax applications (fully completed) but must be accompanied by P.S.V. Licences and must have current Roadworthiness Certificate.

Youth/Community Bus

  1. Appropriate Application Form

  2. Declaration Form

  3. Letter from organisation taxing the vehicle for first time confirming exclusive use of the vehicle

  4. Current roadworthiness Certificate

  5. Correct Fee

Refunds

Appropriate Application Form RF120 should be completed and stamped by An Garda Siochana and returned with tax disc and Vehicle Registration Certificate.

If these documents are lost or misplaced an Application for Replacement Documents RF134 must be completed and stamped by An Garda Siochana. Where refunds of motor tax are granted by the motor tax office there should be 3 whole calendar months left on the tax disc after the month of receipt of the application. Where a Certificate of Destruction issues refunds will only be paid for months remaining on the tax disc after month of issue of the Certificate of Destruction.

In order to process the payment the applicant should also submit their bank details to allow payment be made direct to their bank account. (see reverse of RF120 Form)

NOTE: Your annual rate of tax must exceed €119 in order to qualify for a refund  

Trade Plate Licences

Form required for taxing is RF 700 which must be accompanied by :

  1. Motor Dealer identity number (Garage Code)

  2. Evidence of registration for Value Added Tax, Vat Number or where turnover does not exceed minimum for VAT registration purposes, the Revenue and Social Insurance (RSI) number

  3. Evidence of valuation for rating purposes of the applicant's premises or, if the premises are new and not yet valued, evidence of Planning Permission.

  4. Current Certificate of Insurance under the Road Traffic Act 1961 as amended appropriate to Motor Trader.

  5. Appropriate Fee (€353 per set as at 1/10/13)

  6. Plate(s) being replaced
