Approved Housing Bodies / Voluntary Housing

Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) (also called housing associations or voluntary housing associations) are independent, not-for-profit organisations. They provide affordable rented housing for people who cannot afford to pay private sector rents or buy their own homes; or for particular groups, such as older people or homeless people.
Such bodies must be approved by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government in order to qualify for financial and other aids to provide housing. The Council acts as an intermediary between Approved Housing Bodies and the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government who fund the Voluntary Housing Schemes.
The AHB decide on the types of housing projects/services they will provide, having regard to local needs, and are responsible for tenancy allocations in consultation with the local authorities.
If you are already on the Council list for re-housing, you will be considered when the AHB are allocating a property. The AHB is required to consult with the Council and in most cases, the houses are allocated to persons who are already on the Council’s approved housing list although they may also be advertised locally.
There are a number of AHBs in Roscommon providing accommodation for persons with special needs, the elderly, the homeless and general family type accommodation.
Houses allocated by an AHB cannot be purchased by the tenant in the same way as tenants of Local Authority houses can.
