1. Ownership Documents

The old-style logbook is only for vehicles registered before 1993. The green vehicle Registration Certificate  relates to vehicles registered or any change of ownership or change of vehicle details since MAR 2004. You should keep these documents safely, to avoid the cost and inconvenience of having to replace them at a later date.

2. Private Car Procedures

For first taxing of a new or imported car you need:

  1. Application Form RF100 (From Garage or N.C.T.) fully completed

To renew motor taxation you need:

  1. Completed application form, i.e. Reminder RF100B

To renew tax where a re-declaration is necessary (e.g. change of address, change of class, change of engine) you need:

  1. Completed Declaration Form RF111

  2. Registration Book/Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate

  3. Where there is a change of engine Section 5 of RF111 must be stamped by a Main Dealer and a letter from the Main Dealer on headed paper verifying the change must also be submitted.

Changes of Ownership, Vehicles registered before 1/1/1993:

Dealt with by local Motor Taxation Office.

Changes of Ownership, Vehicles registered since 1/1/93:

If taxing is not taking place then, fully completed Change of Ownership details on reverse of Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate should be forwarded to Vehicle Registration Unit, Shannon, Co.Clare.

To renew tax after a change of ownership. For vehicles registered pre-1993 you need:

  1. Completed Form RF100A (Tax Renewal)

  2. Registration Book

To renew tax after a change of ownership. For vehicles registered after 01/01/1993 you need:

If change of ownership is taking place at point of taxing, you will need

  1. Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate fully completed by seller and buyer with date of sale inserted

  2. Fully completed Form RF100A

Vehicle Registration

The Revenue Commissioners have appointed the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) to carry out a range of vehicle registration functions on their behalf.

You must bring your vehicle to an NCT Centre for registration. You must book your appointment with the NCTS within 7 days of the vehicle entering the State and have completed the registration within 30 days of the vehicle entering the State.

3. Goods Vehicles

Heavy goods: Design Gross Vehicle Weight greater than 3500kgs Light goods: Design Gross Vehicle Weight less than or equal to 3500kgs

Commercial Taxation

If you are taxing a vehicle Commercially for the first time, you will need to submit the following documentation:

If your vehicle is not classed as an N1, your vehicle will need to be converted to a Commercial Vehicle, please request further details for Conversions.

-         Completed RF100 / RF100A - Motor Tax Renewal Form / First Registration of a New or Imported Vehicle

-         Completed RF111A – Goods Only Declaration Form, for vehicles under 3500kg – Which must be signed and stamped at your local Garda Station

-         Original Insurance Certificate – Stating that the vehicle is insured in connection with business use.

-         Proof that the business is Registered with Revenue; i.e. one of the following:

  •  Letter on Revenue Headed Paper quoting Your/Company Name & Address; PPS/VAT No.,
  • Most recent Notice of Assessment from Revenue

 -         Weight Docket – From an Authorised Weighbridge – For All Imported vehicles (or in the case of a new vehicle, if the weight is not already on the NVDF System).

-         Certificate of Road Worthiness – If the vehicle is more than 1-year-old.

NOTE all of the above dated within the last two years.

In the case of vehicles involved in agriculture, a letter from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, confirming details of your active Herd Number must be submitted. Applicants must be the ‘Herd Owner’ and be the registered owner of the vehicle. Alternatively, a Notice of Assessment or letter of tax compliance from Revenue will suffice for farmers who submit accounts.

If you are currently employed by a Company/Business, and you are a PAYE worker, and use your vehicle for the purpose of your employment

-         Please provide a letter from your employer on headed paper which must include the following: -

  •  Your name, address and PPS No.
  • Nature of the Business
  • The Registration number of the Vehicle
  • Confirmation that your vehicle is required for the carriage of goods in the course of your employment with that company
  • A current payslip stating your name, PPS No. and that the name of your employer

(Please blank out amount of earnings etc.,)

To renew motor taxation on a goods vehicle you need:

  1. Completed application form, i.e. Reminder RF100B

  2. From 1/10/13 a current Certificate of Roadworthiness is issued automatically subsequent to completion of vehicle test. (See list of authorised testers) (For vehicles 1 yr or older)

6. Replacement Documents Procedure

If you have misplaced any of the following documents, Form RF134 must be completed and witnessed by a member of the Garda Siochana at your local Garda Station. We can only accept applications for replacement documents from the registered owner of the vehicle at the time of application.
