Roscommon Field Names - Event with Dr Aengus Finnegan

Are you interested in learning how you can get involved in recording fieldnames?
Every field around the country has had a name at one time or other. This name may have described the lie of the land, the owners, buildings that may have once stood in or close to the field, the purpose of the field, size of the field or some event that took place in the field in a bygone time. Roscommon Field Names Project aims to start a discussion on how Roscommon County Council Heritage Office can help communities record, log and understand fieldnames in their area. It is hoped that the database created will become an invaluable cultural heritage asset both for the region and for future generations. Field name research is important and valuable work.
If you are interested in finding out more about how you can help record your local field names, please join Dr. Aengus Finnegan who will tell us more about Roscommon Field Names and how you can help record them. Event takes place in Jacksons, The Square, Roscommon from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday 4th July. This is a free event, but booking is required. A light lunch will be provided. Please email heritage@roscomoncoco.ie to reserve your place.
This project is supported by the Heritage Council as an action of Co. Roscommon Heritage Plan.
