In 1999, a group of parents in Roscommon came together with a shared goal — to establish a Gaelscoil for their children. At the time, there were no Irish-medium primary schools in the area, so a committee was formed. With dedication and support from parents and principals of other Gaelscoileanna, Gaelscoil de hÍde was founded, named in honour of Douglas Hyde, Ireland’s first president and a proud Roscommon native with a deep love of the Irish language. The school opened on September 1st, 2000, in Mote Park, with 17 pupils, teacher Orla Ní Chuinneagáin, and SNA Pauline Ní Chumhaill. Caoilfionn Ní Chuinn served as the first chairperson of the Board of Management. As enrolment grew, the school relocated in 2005 to its current site at Cruby Hill on the Galway Road. Today, Irish remains the main language of learning and communication throughout the school community.
