Roscommon Drama Festival

The Roscommon Drama Festival will be officially launched on Wednesday 24th February at 7.00pm in the County Library, Abbey Street, Roscommon. Castlerea native, John Waters has accepted an invitation to open this years Festival, which runs from 5th March to 13th March in the Roscommon Arts Centre.

An exciting mix excellent of amateur drama will take centre stage for the nine nights with groups from all over the country competing for awards and nominations to the All Ireland Finals. Roscommon Drama Festival's choice of plays offers something for all audiences; from comedy to tragedy, classic plays to contemporary drama and lots more in between. Wexford native Pauline Byrne as been appointed adjudicator.

Roscommon Healthy Reading Scheme

The Roscommon Healthy Reading Scheme will be launched at 10.00a.m. on Wednesday 27th January 2010 at the County Library, Abbey Street, Roscommon.

The Scheme entitled Books Can Help is a joint initiative between the Health Service Executive Roscommon Psychology Department and Roscommon County Council Library Services. Its aim is to make high quality self-help books more accessible to families and adults experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties. The scheme involves GPs and other health professionals recommending specific books to their clients from a list of recommended books available through any of the Roscommon Libraries service network.

This scheme will be formally launched by the Mayor of Roscommon County Council, Cllr. Tony Ward, Dr. Michael Byrne (Principal Psychology Manager, HSE) and Richie Farrell, County Librarian.

SiarSceal Festival March 20th Roscommon Library All Day Event

SiarSceal Festival

An exciting all day event takes place in Roscommon County Library Saturday March 20th 2010, for writers and poets in the region. Commencing with the major and patrons address, followed by The Hanna Greally Poetry Awards Memoir Ceremony presented by Adjudicators Novelist Michael Mullen and Bilingual Poet Adjudicator Nuala Ni Chonchuir, featuring Readings from our Guest writes, and a Choral Medley with the Sliabh Ban Singers from Boyle. Award winning bilingual poet and novelist Nuala Ni Chonchuir will be reading from a selection of her work, including her latest short story collection "Nude", an explorative, self-questioning agenda, full of witty voices rendering adventures both savage and absurd.

Refreshments and Exhibition Appraisal will follow. The themed painting words exhibition by local artist & writers will be launched on the competition themes which are:

  1. "Home Place in Translation"
  2. "Threading my existence through family gone before"
  3. "Roscommon My Home"

Novelist, Historian, Playwright, and Children's author Michael Mullen will give a Creative Writing Master Class in Roscommon Library at 2pm. From four 'till six there is an Open Mike. The Exhibition will run for the duration of four to six weeks.


Don Baker Shannon Cruise on Moon River Pleasure Cruiser: Easter Sunday

As part of the SiarSceal collaborative from the Suck to the Shannon, you can cruise down the Shannon on Easter Sunday afternoon April 4th with Don Baker on Moon River Pleasure Cruiser. U2 (Bono) described him as "The greatest harmonica player in the world". Don will be playing and singing from his albums including his new CD "Rain on the wind".
