RCYO offer lessons in strings, brass and woodwind and are currently recruiting affiliate members. If you have any queries about how to join, or would like any more information about the orchestra, please contact the RCYO Co-ordinator Oliver McHugh by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or you will find them on Facebook “Roscommon County Youth Orchestra”.
RCYO is an award winning music development project dedicated to promoting participation in music by young people from the age of 10 years upward in County Roscommon. It is a partnership project between Roscommon County Council and Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board with the support of the Arts Council and Roscommon Leader Partnership.
In order to provide equal geographic access to young people in the county, RCYO has different sections of the orchestra located in different towns around the county. Currently, woodwind is located in Boyle, strings in Roscommon and brass in Ballaghaderreen.
Classes take place every Saturday. As a member of RCYO, students take part in a weekly lesson, usually in groups of two or three. They also attend an ensemble practice each week. One Saturday each month, all sections come together for a full orchestra rehearsal.
RCYO also maintains an Instrument Bank so that students don't initially have to make the outlay of purchasing an instrument in order to become involved.
Through RCYO, members also have the opportunity to take part in national events through the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras, to go to concerts throughout the country and to perform in RCYO's concerts.
There are a few ways to get involved and these include:
1. Full membership
By becoming a full member of RCYO, a student will have a weekly lesson on an instrument with one of our highly qualified tutors. They will also take part in an ensemble session on the same day as the lesson. Once a month, the ensemble will meet with the other sections of RCYO to play as a full orchestra.
What full members can expect -
- Weekly lesson in pairs or threes with members of a similar standard
- Opportunity to take exams each year with Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM)
- Weekly sectional rehearsals
- Monthly full orchestra rehearsals alternating between Boyle, Roscommon and Ballaghaderreen
- Occasional trips and events with other youth orchestras
- Opportunity to work with highly skilled tutors
Full membership fees are €210 per term
2. Affiliate membership
This type of membership is for those who are already taking lessons elsewhere and are grade 2 or higher. By becoming an affiliate member, they will take part in the weekly ensemble session and the monthly full orchestra rehearsals.
What affiliate members can expect -
- Weekly ensemble session in Roscommon (strings), Boyle (woodwind) or Ballaghaderreen (brass).
- Monthly full orchestra meetings alternating between the three towns
- Opportunity to perform at RCYO concert
- Chance to work with highly skilled tutors
Affiliate membership €70 per term (Sept-Dec and Jan-May)
3. Beginners membership
This type of membership is for complete beginners. New members take part in their weekly class and once they are at a suitable level, they can join the junior orchestra which meets once a month. Once students are at grade 2 standard, they can join the senior orchestra.
This type of membership is for students who are taking classes elsewhere but who are not yet at grade 2 standard. The junior orchestra meets for an hour each month and gives beginners an opportunity to play as part of a group in preparation for joining the senior orchestra once they are at an appropriate level. Fees Full membership €190 per term (Sept-Dec and Jan-May)
Beginner membership €130 per term
RCYO Fees are already subsidised by Roscommon County Council, Roscommon VEC and the Arts Council of Ireland. However in some circumstances further reduced rates may be attained for young people's parents who are experiencing financial difficulties.
