Summary of non-compliance.

As part of Roscommon Co. Council Cryptosporidium monitoring programme on its public water supplies, Cryptosporidium was confirmed to be present in the water supply at Longford Spring on 23rd March 2011

There are a number of possible causes and following laboratory confirmation of the samples taken, the cause of the contamination is from the faeces of cattle entering the spring source.

Actions Consumers can Take.

Following immediate notification to the Health Services Executive (HSE) and subsequent advice from the HSE, Roscommon County Council implemented a boil water notice. The boil water notice was reinforced on 23rd March 2011

Actions members of the public can take

The agricultural sector is reminded of the obligations set out in the European Communities (Good Agricultural Practice for Protection of Waters) Regulations 2006. (GAP Regs 2006). Members of the public should report any suspicious or illegal activities that could have the potential to affect the ground water quality to the Environment Section of Roscommon County Council at 090 6637100.

Actions to be by Roscommon County Council.

Roscommon County Council has carried out further sampling and testing of the water supply. All results have been forwarded to the HSE. Roscommon County Council will continue to monitor the water supply and will continue to liaise with the HSE and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

A meeting took place between Roscommon County Council and the HSE on 15th April 2011. The boil water notice remains in place until appropriate treatment is in place on the scheme.

Farm surveys were also undertaken in the region being supplied by the Longford Spring source.

An Ultra Voilet treatment plant (a barrier capable of removing cryptosporidium) has now been installed on the scheme. The UV plant is designed to cater for both Castlerea Regional & Castlerea Urban WSS. The work was completed on 16th March 2012 and following a period of testing the HSE are satisfied that the boil water notice can now be lifted. This work has been carried out as advance works to the West Roscommon Regional Water Supply Scheme.
