Be Winter Ready

Weather conditions are forecast by Met Éireann and are monitored on a 24/7 basis throughout the winter period (mid-October to mid-April). When a risk of frost and/or ice occurs, a fleet of seven trucks with salt spreaders is mobilised to salt strategic routes on the road network throughout the County. Truck-mounted snow ploughs are also used during significant snow falls. A map of treated routes is shown below and a list of the treated roads is shown in a separate table below the map.

Salt is rationed to Local Authorities by the NRA. If salt stocks fall below a certain level, it may be necessary to reduce the overall number of roads being treated in order to continue treating the higher priority roads (i.e., the motorway and the national road network). During severe weather conditions, members of the public wishing to contact Roscommon County Council outside of office hours can ring 090-663-7100 for a list of emergency contact numbers.

Driving in Severe Winter Weather Conditions

  • Avoid all unnecessary journeys
  • To the extent possible, travel on roads that are being treated with salt
  • Be aware that ice-free roads cannot be guaranteed, even on treated routes
  • Reduce your speed and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you
  • Be aware that a local roads and many regional are not treated with salt
  • Watch out for icy stretches, compacted snow and weather-related road damage (pot-holes)

Special Notice on Clearing of Footpaths

Local Authorities have been advised by the Attorney General that members of the public will not incur any liability where they clear snow in a safe manner from footpaths outside their residences or businesses. The work should be undertaken in such a manner that obstacles or hazards are not created on footpaths or public roads. The public are advised to remove snow from the paths to the edge of the roadway.
