Winter Service Plan

Weather conditions are forecast by Met Éireann and are monitored on a 24/7 basis throughout the winter period (mid-October to mid-April). When a risk of frost and/or ice occurs, a fleet of seven trucks with salt spreaders is mobilised to salt strategic routes on the road network throughout the County. Truck-mounted snow ploughs are also used during significant snow falls. A map of treated routes is shown below and a list of the treated roads is shown in a separate table below the map.

The amount of salt required to treat a road (i.e., the application rate) is determined by weather conditions. If increased application rates are required during severe weather, it may be necessary to reduce the overall number of Priority 2 roads being treated in order to maintain effective treatment of Priority 1 roads (Priority 1 = the motorway and the national road network). During severe weather conditions, members of the public wishing to contact Roscommon County Council outside of office hours can ring 090-663-7100 for a list of emergency contact numbers.
Driving in Severe Winter Weather Conditions
