Road Safety in Schools

The Council continue to promote various road safety initiatives. The Cycle Training Initiative is subsidised at primary schools throughout the County. Assistance is also given towards the “Drive Safe for Life” Programme which targets transition year students in secondary schools. The course educates students on road safety and promotes good practices for young drivers of the future.  

The Road Safety Together Committee comprising representatives of Council, Gardai, RSA, NRA and HSE and consider a range of road safety issues. The County Roscommon Road Safety Plan sets out the county’s strategy on road safety and the various road safety messages outlined in the Plan are supported by the Council. 

Junior School Wardens are trained at the following primary schools: 

  • Convent of Mercy, Boyle
  • St. Patrick’s, Strokestown
  • St. Paul’s, Castlerea
  • Abbeycarton, Elphin
  • Scóil Mhuire Lourdes, Loughglynn 

All five schools participate in the Regional Competition for Junior School Wardens with schools from Roscommon, Longford and Westmeath participating in the competition annually.

In conjunction with the Road Safety Authority, Roscommon County Council distributes information leaflets and posters and assists the Road Safety Authority with specific advertising campaigns in relation to drink-driving, speeding, bank holiday travel, back to school and seat belt wearing.

High visibility vests are available to the public and are also distributed in conjunction with An Garda Síochána.
