Ownership Documents

1. Log Book

Log Book

This old-style logbook is only for vehicles registered before 1993.


2. Vehicle Licensing Certificate (V.L.C.)

Vehicle Licensing Cert.

This is a yellow document and relates to vehicles registered or any change of ownership or change of vehicle details since 1993.


3. Vehicle Registration Certificate (V.R.C.)

Vehicle Registration Cert.

This is a green document and relates to vehicles registered or any change of ownership or change of vehicle details since MAR 2004. When taxing the vehicle for the first time in the country you will need the RF100 form (available from garage or Revenue Commissioners.) Following first time taxing, you will receive a Vehicle Registration Certificate from the Vehicle Registration Unit, Shannon, Co. Clare.


You should keep these documents safely, to avoid the cost and inconvenience of having to replace them at a later date.


Private Car Procedures

For first taxing of a new or imported car you need:

  1. Application Form RF100 (From Garage or N.C.T.) fully completed
  2. Appropriate Fee: Motor Taxation-Rates of Duty - Effective: 01 January 2013.pdf (size 32.1 KB)

To renew motor taxation when there is no break in tax you need:

  1. Completed application form, i.e. Reminder RF100B or Motor Tax Renewal Form (RF100A).pdf (size 170.8 KB).
  2. Appropriate Fee: Motor Taxation-Rates of Duty - Effective: 01 January 2013.pdf (size 32.1 KB)

To renew motor taxation when there is a break in tax you need :

  1. Completed Motor Tax Renewal Form (RF100A).pdf (size 170.8 KB) witnessed by Garda
  2. Appropriate Fee: Motor Taxation-Rates of Duty - Effective: 01 January 2013.pdf (size 32.1 KB)

To renew tax where a re-declaration is necessary (e.g. change of address, change of class, change of engine) you need:

  1. Completed Declaration Form RF111
  2. Registration Book/Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate
  3. Appropriate Fee: Motor Taxation-Rates of Duty - Effective: 01 January 2013.pdf (size 32.1 KB)
Changes of Ownership, Vehicles registered before 1/1/1993:

Dealt with by local Motor Taxation Office.

Changes of Ownership, Vehicles registered since 1/1/93:

If taxing is not taking place then, fully completed Change of Ownership details on reverse of Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate should be forwarded to Vehicle Registration Unit, Shannon, Co. Clare.

To renew tax after a change of ownership. For vehicles registered pre-1993 you need:

  1. Completed Form RF100A (Tax Renewal)
  2. Registration Book
  3. Appropriate Fee: Motor Taxation-Rates of Duty - Effective: 01 January 2013.pdf (size 32.1 KB)

To renew tax after a change of ownership. For vehicles registered after 01/01/1993 you need:

If change of ownership is taking place at point of taxing, you will need

  1. Vehicle Licensing Certificate/Vehicle Registration Certificate fully completed by seller and buyer with date of sale inserted
  2. Fully completed Form RF100A

Vehicle Registration

The Revenue Commissioners have appointed the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) to carry out a range of vehicle registration functions on their behalf.

From 1 September 2010 it will no longer be possible to register a vehicle at a Revenue Vehicle Registration Office (VRO). Instead, the vehicle must be brought to an NCT Centre for registration. You must book your appointment with the NCTS within 7 days of the vehicle entering the State and have completed the registration within 30 days of the vehicle entering the State.

Goods Vehicles

Heavy goods:Design Gross Vehicle Weight greater than 3500kgs
Light goods:Design Gross Vehicle Weight less than or equal to 3500kgs

For first taxation of a new or imported goods vehicle you need:

  1. Completed Application Form RF100 (From Garage or N.C.T.)
  2. Weight docket from authorised weigh-bridge if weight over 1524 Kgs (See List Below)
  3. Goods only declaration form RF111A stamped by Gardai where the vehicle has a design gross vehicle weight of 3,500kgs or under
  4. Statement of result of vehicle test (pass) where appropriate if one year old or over. (See list of authorised testers)
  5. Appropriate Fee: Motor Taxation-Rates of Duty - Effective: 01 January 2013.pdf (size 32.1 KB)
  6. Appropriate fee for issue of Certificate of Road Worthiness. (Light: €6.00, Heavy: €13.00)
  7. Commercial Certificate of Insurance

To renew motor taxation on a goods vehicle you need:

  1. Completed application form, i.e. Reminder RF100B or Motor Tax Renewal Form (RF100A).pdf (size 170.8 KB)
  2. Appropriate Fee: Motor Taxation-Rates of Duty - Effective: 01 January 2013.pdf (size 32.1 KB)
  3. If design gross weight is less than 3500 kgs a current Certificate of Road Worthiness is required for light goods vehicles 1 year old and every year thereafter.(fee €6.00)
  4. If design gross weight is greater than 3500 kgs a current Certificate of Road Worthiness is required for heavy goods vehicles 1 year old and every year therafter. (fee €13.00)
  5. Goods only declaration form RF111A stamped by Gardai where the vehicle has a design gross vehicle weight of 3,500kgs or under
  6. Commercial Certificate of Insurance

Replacement Documents

If you have misplaced any of the following documents, Form RF134 must be completed and witnessed by a member of the Garda Siochana at your local Garda Station.

We can only accept applications for replacement documents from the registered owner of the vehicle at the time of application.
