ENVIRONMENTAL COMPETITIONS –SCHOOLS/COMMUNITIES
Roscommon County Council promote a number of environmental competitions namely:
These environmental competitions are aimed at getting communities involved in improving and maintaining their own local areas. They also promote civic pride and encourage people to take responsibility for litter control in their own communities, and strengthen links and communication between local communities and the local authority. Prizes are presented by the Mayor at a ceremony usually held towards the end of October each year at which the press, council officials and local councillors attend.
Application Forms can be obtained from the Environment Office, Roscommon County Council.

Tidy Towns Committees are involved in encouraging entries from residents groups for this competition. The closing date for entries in this competition is generally towards the end of April each year and judging takes place during July and August. Marks are awarded in four different categories:
- Effort
- Tidiness
- Landscaping/Planting
- Overall Appearance

The Floral Pride Competition is promoted by Roscommon County Council. This competition aims to motivate people in villages and towns in the County to improve the appearance of "their own local place" by planting flowers, shrubs, and trees.
It is a collective effort by members of the community who share in creating a new planted area, maintaining the work and enjoying the rewards of the planted area. Making the area in which you live more beautiful has many benefits for a community.

Gorthaganny –Best Community Effort
This is a competition aimed at the rural community. Community groups chose a mile of roadside boundary (outside speed limits and not a major road). This competition aims to promote awareness of hedgerows, their importance as boundaries and as a natural feature. Miles are assessed on hedgerow interest, quality and mix of vegetation, flora, manmade features, as well as litter levels. Judging takes place under the following categories:

- 2ndPrize
- Litter Free Mile
- Award for Community Effort

National Tree Week
National Tree Week is organised by Tree Council of Ireland during the month of March. The Tree Council donates trees to the Council, who is turn invite Community Groups/Schools to apply for trees. The Scheme is advertised during month of February each year.
