County Roscommon Profile
County Roscommon occupies an area of 254,819 hectares with a total population of 58,768 persons in 2006, an increase of 9.2% from the 2002 census. Roscommon is the second smallest County in the province of Connacht and the fifth smallest County in the state. Roscommon continues having the highest dependency ratio throughout the country. Within Roscommon, there exist the typical urban-rural differential, with age dependency being lower in the county's more urban areas, Athlone West Rural (27.5%) and Roscommon.
Topographically most of the County is flat to undulating with most areas between 60 and 100 metres above sea level. The boundary to the East is provided by the river Shannon which is surrounded in parts by very low lying land that is subject to flooding. The agricultural potential of the land in the east and parts of the north of the county is very limited due to poor drainage and a high proportion of organic soils. By contrast, conditions are much more favorable on the shallow soils that are found in the central and southern parts of the County. County Roscommon is situated in the heart of Ireland with good access to the main urban centres, seaports and airports. There are also three rail lines that pass through the County. The north of the county is crossed by the N5 while the N6 extends across the Southern edge from Athlone to Ballinasloe. The principal town, Roscommon, with a population of 12,504 at the 2006 census, is the hub of a radial network of National Secondary roads. Many of the urban centres that have a role in the economic and social development of the County are located either on or beyond the boundary, such as Athlone, Longford, Carrick-on-Shannon and Ballinasloe.
